Despite of the designers' intention to create furniture which can easily be produced mechanically, the making of most modern classics still requires much skilled hand labour and various different production steps.
This is why we are buying our furniture in components from small family owned workshops and have them assembled, packed and shipped after a scrutinious quality check. Any one of our suppliers is specialized in processing a specific material - sometimes even only one special article. This diversification guarantees the highest possible skill level for any material and process - and still low production cost.
The making of most of our products begins with tons of different kinds of steel tubes being carried into the metal processing plant. In the first production step tubes have to be cut to appropriate lengths. The upper frame of a Corbusier Chaiselongue consists of no less than five different lengths of tubular steel. The tubes are curved to their shape with bending machines. To stay with our example: As many as 16 curves of different radius have to be bent into the steel tubes for the Chaiselongue frame. The picture on the left shows parts of cantilever chair frames.
The welders clamp the different frame components into templates and hard-solder them. They do it very well as you can see from the detail view left. On a Corbusier Chaiselongue 14 welding seams have to be polished mirror-like by the grinders, before the raw frames can receive their 35 micron chrome plating.
The pieces for our leather coverings are mostly cut by hand from selectes hides. To make a Corbusier armchair upholstery, as many as 14 differently sized parts are required.
The pieces are then sorted by their structure and grain in order to make sure that the grain of neighbouring areas on the finished upholstery will be equal. After this the pieces are sewn together. In the next step the ready coverings are mounted on the upholsteries which are made of many different materials like polyurethane foam, dacron, natural feathers or latex. Completed upholsteries are then brought to the steelform final assembly, where we are mounting feet, straps, armrests and fit the upholsteries to their frames.
Lastly, after a very critical glance, our furniture is packed into boxes and shipped to our customers all over the world.
