Eileen Gray: Bibendum Armchair

Two of these unusual but very comfortable chairs appeared in the early 1920ies in Eileen Gray's own appartment in the Rue Bonaparte in Paris. Later she used it in various furnishings she conceived for her avantgarde clientèle.
Chrome plated steel base. PU-foam upholstery on hardwood frame. Covered with leather.

The detail photo on the left side shows the beautiful finishing of the upholstery. Lacking the polyurethane foam that is used nowadys , the originals in the 1920ies looked much saggier. |
