Founded by Walter Gropius and later directed by Mies van der Rohe, it is nowadays mainly known for being the birthplace of steel furniture. Marcel Breuer, Mart Stam and Mies van der Rohe were fascinated by this new material and its mass production potential, came up with iconic designs like the Wassily Chairs, the Laccio Tables and the Barcelona Chair.

The "Wassily Chair" is the very first armchair made of steel. His name derives from being used for the private home of painter Wassily Kandinsky who also was a teacher at the Bauhaus. The picture on the rigt shows a teacher's home, in this case Lazlo Moholy Nagy's.
